Albert Benjamin "Happy" Chandler
Second Commissioner of Major League Baseball
1945-1951

Prior to being appointed as the second Commissioner, Albert Chandler held the position of United States Senator representing the State of Kentucky. In the Senate, he earned an annual salary of $10,000 per year. As Commissioner of Major League Baseball, he earned $50,000 per year.

Chandler is most noted for approving the contract of the first black major league player, Jackie Robinson, in 1947. For this act, he is considered by many to be Baseball’s greatest commissioner though others believe it makes him the worst.

Many believe that because of his decision to knock down the racial barrier in baseball, he was not appointed to a second term as Commissioner.

Steroid use was not an issue during his tenure.
